Virgin Mary: Annunciation The Archangel Gabriel is raising his right hand and holding a staff in his left hand as he kneels behind the Virgin Mary, who is nimbed, has her hands joined, and is kneeling at a prie-dieu and looking back over her right shoulder at Gabriel. Above is a dove, symbol of the Holy Ghost in a mandorla. Carved on the side of the prie-dieu is a winged figure, possibly an angel, who is holding a snake. The scene is in a wood-paneled, windowed room with a canopied bed and with a vase of flowers in the foreground on a ledge.
The miniature is within an elaborate architectural frame, decorated at the top with the head and wings of an angel and at the bottom with a mask. The nscription in the lower margin is ALPHA.
