Hours of Pierre de Bosredont
Gift of the Trustees of the William S. Glazier Collection, 1984
Christ: Pietáa — The Virgin Mary, nimbed and veiled, is seated holding on her lap the body of Christ, with the crown of thorns and a cross-projecting nimbus. He is wearing a short loincloth, and His bleeding wounds are visible. Mary and Christ are flanked by a nimbed Evangelist John with joined hands and three (the third only partially visible) Holy Women. The Women are nimbed, and two are holding covered jars. Behind the Virgin Mary is a cross surmounted by titulus INRI. . A nail hole is visible in each arm of the cross. Two gold globes with rays, possibly representing the sun and moon, flank the cross above. The scene is set in a landscape with hills and a city or buildings in the background.
The margins are decorated with floreate ornament, including a strawberry, inhabited by two rabbits. The heraldic shield of Pierre de Bosredont (quarterly, vair and gules) is in the lower margin.
