Summary:

Print in honour of Humphrey Parsons, Lord Mayor of London 1730-31 and 1740-41 with text in Latin and English. In the centre Parsons's portrait in an oval supported by Justice, Truth and Law seated on clouds with the dome of St Paul's beyond; rays of a star pass through the portrait on to a personification of London seated on a bale of goods, a shield with the coat of arms of the city resting against her and an anchor behind. On the left stands another allegorical figure holding a shield with Parsons's coat-of-arms and offering a blazing heart symbolising his devotion to London; the mayoral sword, mace, keys and cap lie at her feet. In the four corners are small scenes: a gardener feeding a hive of bees with the motto, "They Reward his Care"; a man holds his hand out to a lily while a breeze blows towards him and the sun shines down, with the motto, "Without pride he Receives the favour"; the Lord Mayor addresses the Common Council, with the motto, "For the Country"; a man tramples on the naked figures of Avarice and Hypocrisy, with the motto, "Now and ever". At lower centre an oval with lines of verse beginning, "This Man fill'd with Vertue ..." and a dedication to Parsons. Cf. British Museum online catalog.
