Inscribed on the album page below the design, in brown ink, "Paupertatis incomoda (title) / Magnúm paúperies opprobriúm jubet / Quidvis et facere et pati / Virtutisque viam deserit ardúae" (Poverty, deemed a base reproach, bids us do all, suffer all, and quits the steep path of Virtue). The text is from Horace, "Odes", Book III, 24, lines 42-44.
