Adoration of the Shepherds
Black chalk with brown wash paper.
3 7/8 x 5 inches (98 x 128 mm)
The Joseph F. McCrindle Collection.
2009.55
Notes:

This drawing entered the Morgan Library & Museum with an attribution to eighteenth-century French artist François Boucher. Such an attribution is understandable, as the composition loosely resembles Boucher's The Light of the World in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon (inv. no. 1955-106). Neither the loose lines of black chalk, nor the uneven application of brown wash resembles Boucher's treatment of the subject (Alexandre Ananoff, L'Oeuvre Dessiné de François Boucher (1703-1770): catalogue raisonné. (Paris: F. de Nobele, 1966). nos. 627-636, pp. 169-172).
Formerly attributed to François Boucher, Paris 1703-1770 Paris.

Provenance:
Joseph F. McCrindle, New York (McCrindle collection no. A1267).
Associated names:
