"Je prie dieu pur mon pere, et pur la France" (?)
Hand-colored etching.
4 1/2 x 3 3/8 inches (114 x 85 mm)
Gift of Mrs. Charles W. MacMullen.
1990.12
Notes:

Watermark: none.
Evidently an anonymous copy of a popular print inspired, according to contemporary accounts, by a miniature portrait by Aimée Thibault of "Le Roi de Rome" (Napoléon II) as a child, adorning a round ornamental box presented to the Emperor Napoleon in 1814 by the Empress Marie-Louise and subsequently engraved and distributed at Napoleon's request in that same year. The first engraving executed after Thibault's portrait apparently depicted the child wearing a Polish uniform and bearing the caption "Dieu veille sur mon père et sur la France", and it was at Napoleon's behest that the uniform be changed to that of the French National Guard and the caption to that found here.

Inscription:

On recto: in brown ink at lower center of print is printed the title of the image.

Mrs. Charles W. MacMullen.
