Inscription:

Inscribed on verso of lining, at upper right, in brown ink, "Barnard / 1787"; at center of lower edge, in another hand, in brown ink, remnants of letters, "PI". On verso of mount, Richardson's pressmarks, in brown ink, "Q 53 / AA. 32 / A #25 / J [or "T"]e.45 / A. #52 / C".

Jonathan Richardson, Sr. (Lugt 2183, 2983); John Barnard (Lugt 1420); his sale, London, Greenwood, 16-24 February 1787, in view of inscription on verso, but it is impossible to identify the lot; Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J. P. Morgan, Jr. (1867-1943), New York.
