Perceval (left), as Macbeth, consults the witches. He wears his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, and staggers back with out-thrown arms; he exclaims ('misquoting'): "I Conjure you by that which you profess Answer me! though you untie the winds & let Them fight against the Chuches [sic] Answer me What I Ask you!!!" The witches, wearing short tunics with bare legs and cothurnes, have shaggy hair, talons for finger-nails, and resemble men; the first (left) has cat's whiskers; a serpent is twined round her outstretched right arm; they say "Demand"; "we'll Answer", and "Come high or Low thyself and office deafly Show". In the centre of the design is a huge cauldron resting on a low iron grid containing flames; flames issue from it and it is ornamented with a skull and cross-bones. Behind, their heads and shoulders emerging from clouds or smoke, are the ghosts of Burke, Pitt, and Fox as the three apparitions, all wearing shrouds over their heads. Burke, old and spectacled, wears a biretta (as in No. 6026, &c.) inscribed 'Sublime & Beautiful'; he says: "Laugh to Scorn the Power of Man". Pitt, with outstretched arm, says: "Be Lion mettled proud and thak [sic] no Care- who Chafes who frets or where Conspirers are". Fox says: "be Bloody hold & Resolute". Behind and on the extreme left is the Speaker, looking over a flight of steps hewn from a rock; he wears his wig and quotes Macbeth's words in the final scene: "They have tied me to a stake I cannot Fly hut Bear like I must Fight the Cause [course]".
