Edda Renouf

An American artist born in 1943 in Mexico, Renouf creates minimalist abstract paintings and drawings developed from her close attention to subtle properties of materials, such as the woven threads in linen and canvas and the flax and cotton fibers of paper. Renouf often alters these supports by removing thread from the weave of a canvas, or, as in the present work, creating lines by incising the paper. In this drawing, Renouf connected fifty graphite points with delicately incised horizontal lines across a central axis. This drawing demonstrates her interest in "making the invisible visible" by contrasting the paper's surface, on which she has drawn dotted lines in graphite, with its texture, which she has exposed through incised lines.
