This view of a Turkish cemetery likely dates to Raffet's travels with his friend Prince Anatole Demidoff which began in 1837 and lasted for the remainder of the artist's life. His initial trip yielded views for the heavily illustrated tomes "Voyage dans la Russie méridionale et la Crimée, par la Hongrie, la Valachie et la Moldavie exécuté en 1837, sous la direction de M. Anatole de Démidoff, par MM. de Sainson, Le Play, Huot, Léveillé, Raffet, Rousseau, de Nordmann et Du Ponceau."
