Inscription:

Inscribed on the verso, in graphite: at lower center, "143"; and at lower left corner, in another hand, "B4". On the old mount, at center, in graphite, "JG" and "Geddes's Sale".
Watermark: Foolscap with seven points over "4" and three balls. Two balls on hat, curls in hair.

Andrew Geddes; his sale, London, Christie's, 8-14 April 1845, one of ten in lot 335: "Ten interesting studies, by Rembrandt and his school" (to "Gibbs" for £0.12.0); James Gibbs (fl. mid-19th century), London (his initials on old mount; Lugt 1125, identified as John Gibbs); Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J. P. Morgan, Jr. (1867-1943), New York.
