Lucas Samaras

A prolific and highly versatile artist whose work - primarily sculptures and photographs - often defies classification, Samaras has produced works on paper throughout his career. The present sheet belongs to a series of drawings of single words Samaras created in the summer of 1975 using a hypodermic needle to apply the ink. Here the word DRAW is rendered in a scrawling, expressionistic fashion with a nervous cross-hatching pattern that gives the work a psychedelic quality.
