This drawing is a study for Matisse's large composition, Music, painted in 1910 for the Russian collector Sergey Shchukin and now in the collection of the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg. Matisse added the signature and date (12) at the bottom of this sheet at a later date, during the 1940s, misremembering the actual year of the sketch.
