Notes:
A prolific draftsman, Carroll Dunham has been known since the 1980s for his biomorphic style derived from Surrealism and characterized by cartoon-like imagery and lurid colors. The present drawing is typical of his early work with its combination of organic forms reminiscent of Arshile Gorky and energetic, graffiti-like handling indebted to Cy Twombly. While abstract, the drawing evokes a psychedelic landscape peopled with strange organisms.
