Red chalk, accented with point of brush and dark red chalk wash, on paper; highlight of white oil paint in the eye of Psyche and small correction in same medium in upper part of the drapery at the left of Venus; verso: red chalk.

Purchased by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) in 1909.

The drawing is after one of the pendentives illustrating the classical myth of Cupid and Psyche in the "Sala di Psyche" of the Villa Farnesina in Rome. The sketch on the verso is also based on one of the frescoes of the Loggia of Psyche.
