Ray disregards the original appearance of this illustration in the 1896 New York edition and simply describes this as an "unused" drawing. Cf. G.N. Ray. The art of the French illustrated book. New York : The Pierpont Morgan Library, 1982, p. 393.

Signed "Vierge" in ink at lower left; "#77" in blue pencil on verso, along with specifications for reproduction at foot.
