Description: 

A page from one of Cibo’s sketchbooks, this drawing records, as is often the case with Cibo’s works, the day (20 June 1567), place (“on the strada maestro”) and subject “the abbey of Msgr. Nocera” that it depicts. In addition to other single leaves, the Morgan also holds an intact sketchbook by Cibo, inv. 1969.16.

Inscription: 

Inscribed at upper edge, in pen and brown ink, "[symbol for Venus i.e. Venerdi] 20. d[i] giug[ni] 1567 su la strada maestra: Badia d[i] mons[igno]r[e] Rmo[mo superscript] [Reverendissimo(?)] d[i] nocera"; on verso, in black chalk, "8".

Dr. Manus Schaefer, New York; by whom presented in 1962 to János Scholz (no mark; see Lugt S. 2933b), New York (according to Scholz, "given to me by Dr. Manus Schaefer, N.Y. 1962, after I have played with the Vegh Quartet in his house the Schubert C major Quartet").
