Drawing is a copy after Jan van Goyen's (1596-1656) signed and dated composition of 1651, last known to have been in the collection of Sir Audley Neeld, Grittleton House, near Chippenham, Wiltshire.

Inscribed at lower center, on the side of the large boat, in black chalk, "VG 1651"; and in lower right corner, adjoining Esdaile's initials and possibly also in his hand, in brown ink, "89". Inscribed on the verso, in lower left corner, in Esdaile's hand, in brown ink, "1834 WE 80x"; immediately following, possibly also in Esdaile's hand, in graphite, from "St ["t" in superscript] Thos ["s" in superscript] Lawrence's colln ["n" in superscript]; at lower center, in Esdaile's hand, in brown ink, "Van Goyen"; and numbered in graphite, at lower left, "3629"; and at lower center, "7".
