This curious sheet consists of a spare pen-and-ink landscape onto which a clipped segment of a drawing containing foliage and two female figures at right has been pasted in order to enrich the foreground. As Marcel Roethlisberger was the first to observe, only the pasted patch with the shrubs and figures is by Claude. He noted that it had already been mounted to the second sheet by 1817. The author of the panoramic view to which the patch has been added remains unknown, as does the identity of the artist or collector who combined the two sheets.
