Signed and dated at lower right, in point of brush and black wash, partially cut off, "J v der meer / de jonge F 16[99?]". Inscribed on the verso (visible through lining with fibre optic light), at lower left edge, in Esdaile's hand, in brown ink, "L46 1834 WE 6ox".
Watermark: Arms of Amsterdam over letters "IS", fragment.
