Laid down onto a cardboard mount with number "61" printed at top and "Rembrandt van Ryn" below (probably that of a previous English collector, since it reflects the mounting practice of the British Museum).

Inscription: 

Inscribed in graphite, at upper right, "Born"; and with calculations at lower right, "11 x 13" (twice).
Watermark: countermark, letters "PB" (visible through cardboard lining with fiber optic light).

Provenance: 
Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J. P. Morgan, Jr. (1867-1943), New York.
