Drawing shows Mr. Weller senior standing in front of the fireplace at the Blue Boar, smiling, with his back to the fire, with one hand in his pocket and the other evidently grasping his lapel and lacking the pipe included in the final version of the design; at left, his son Sam Weller sits on a settle at a small table with a paper and quill in his hands, as the barmaid stands at right with a glass on a tray.
