Inscribed on the album page below the design, in brown ink, "Fortúna non mútat genús (title)/ Coeca fove indignos fors, út lúbet, et túa dona/ Simia ne maneat simia, non facient" (Blind, she favors the unworthy, but your gifts cannot change a monkey). The title is from Horace, "Epodes", 4, line 6. According to the 1607 "Emblemata", the other lines are a quotation from Domincius Lampsonius.
