Brush and gray and light brown oil, and pen and brown ink; on a paper prepared with a dark brown ground of lead white tinted with yellow-brown ochre and a little red in oil medium.

Inscribed on the album page below the design, in brown ink, "Victrix malorúm patientia (title) / Dúrúm, sed leviús fir patienta. Qúidqúid corrigere est nefas" ('Tis hard: but by endurance that grows lighter which Heaven forbids to change for good). The text is from Horace, "Odes", Book I, 24, lines 19-20.
