The subject of the drawings executed in graphite, include landscape and portrait studies made during the artist's Italian sojourn of 1859-1861. The landscape drawings depict views of the environs of Rome and the Campagna, notably the town of Olevano, the Serpentara, and various bridges including the Ponte Nomentano, Mammolo, and Salario. Among the portraits are those of Signora Pepina Baldi, the three granddaughters of Joseph Anton Koch (one of whom may have embroidered the cover), and Father Ambrogio Tavanni of Lebanon, Abbot of the Convent of S. Antonio Abbate, Rome.
