Inscription: 

Inscribed on the verso, with miscellaneous pen trials, and at lower center, in brown ink, "...ransel / ... / 129". On the old mount, with Knapton code, in brown ink: at upper left, "331"; below at center, "Z 40"; and at upper right, "1N / L61".

George Knapton (1698-1778), London; bequeathed by him to General George Morrison (1704?-1799), London; Knapton-Morrison sale, London, T. Philipe, 25 May-3 June 1807, presumably one of lots 328-35 (not lot 331 as indicated by the inscription on the verso), possibly lot 325 (as Elsheimer): "a small landscape, a wood-scene, pen and Ind. Ink, pencil-heightened-fine effect" (to Georgina Morrison for £0.14.0); Georgina Morrison; Sir Joseph Hawley; sale, M. de Salicis...and property of a Baronet [Sir Henry Hawley (1745-1825)], London, Christie's, 16 July 1891, one of five in lot 195: "A Wooded Landscape, by Elsheimer; ..."
