Kuitca established his reputation in the 1990s with works inspired by architectural drawings, maps, house plans, and theater seating charts, in which he explored the relationship between space and memory in the imagination. In 2006, he launched a series of paintings he called "cubistoid," based on the palette and structure of analytic Cubism. Although the works are abstract, the angular patterns create the illusion of folds. This became the source for Gutter, an original sketchbook in which Kuitca used similar motifs. Instead of following the traditional method of centering each painting on the page, he centered it on the gutter of each spread, playing on the echo between real and illusionistic folds.
