Georg Baselitz

Exhibition label: After moving from Berlin to the countryside in 1966, Baselitz turned to rural motifs such as woodworkers, dogs, and trees. Rejecting the conventions of illusionistic representation, he fragmented the image, dislocating its different parts as in a Cubist collage or in the Surrealist game of cadavre exquis - in which several artists add to a drawing without being able to see the others' contributions. Baselitz intended for these disjunctions to call attention to the composition itself rather than the psychological connotations of its subject. Such pictorial manipulations eventually led Baselitz to invert his images.
