Notes:

Knowlton is primarily a sculptor who uses materials from outside the realm of fine art, such as concrete and metal grating, to create work that might be described as anti-heroic. He is an avid birdwatcher and birds feature prominently in his oeuvre, which extends to drawing. In this sheet from the Bird Series, Knowlton distills the shape of a bird into an austere, but sensuous, abstract composition. Although it is a two-dimensional work, the densely drawn form seems to exist on a plane apart from the smudged paper.
