1579-1620
Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus
Pen and brown ink, with brown wash, over red chalk, on paper.
8 1/8 x 5 7/16 inches (206 x 139 mm)
Gift of Janos Scholz.
1993.90
Notes:

Long ago identified as a preparatory study for Saraceni's painting in the Museo Diocesano, Gaeta. The group of angels, however, is identical to that in Marcantonio Bassetti's drawing of St. Charles Borromeo in adoration of the Sacred Nail (Teyler Museum, Haarlem, inv. K 024; see van Tuyll, Italian Drawings of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries in the Teyler Museum, 2021, no. 31), and the style of the two drawings is the same. The Morgan drawing could, therefore, be a copy by Bassetti rather than Saraceni's original sketch.

Inscription:

Inscribed at lower center of mount, in pen and brown ink, "84"; on verso of mount, at lower left, in pen and brown ink, "1847. Dr ["r" in superscript] ?Cramers Sale Oxford".
