Notes:
Although he began his career as a painter, Taylor turned to sculpture and drawing in the mid-1980s, often using found materials such as wires and broomsticks. During his short life he produced more than 5,000 drawings, which, while related to his three-dimensional constructions by their subjects, form an independent body of work of great sensuousness and painterliness. Taylor often worked out his ideas for sculptures in sketchbook drawings such as this one, which relates to the "Wire Instruments" series (1989-90). Wire resembles a line drawn in space, underscoring the important relationship between the artist's work in both mediums.
