Richard Lindner

Lindner is often considered a precursor to Pop art. He is best known for his vibrant colored paintings that combine human figures and machine parts. He began his career as a commercial illustrator and graphic designer for French, German, and American publications. Lindner left Germany in 1933 when Hitler rose to power, remaining in Paris until he was able to escape in 1941. He began his fine art career later in life, in 1952. This sheet is one of several preparatory drawings for his 1961 painting The Red Stair. The work reveals his fascination with urban scenes, particularly the underground characters around Times Square in New York City.
