Active in Rome during the Counter-Reformation, Siciolante over the course of his career turned from the mannerist style of his master, Perino del Vaga, to a more normative style based on life studies like this drawing. This beautiful drapery study on blue paper is preparatory for the fresco of the Visitation in the so-called Fugger Chapel in Santa Maria dell'Anima, the church of the German congregation in Rome. It is the first drawing by the artist in the Morgan collection.
