Notes:
Kienbusch created a body of work that is abstract, yet intimately bound with nature. Although he was a contemporary of the New York School of abstract expressionists, his touchstone was the American Modernist John Marin, whose life inspired Kienbusch to spend time painting in Maine. The title of this early work references Little White Island, one of thousands of islands off the coast of Maine. It is rendered in a hard-edged, architectonic style that the artist reserved for geologic or non-organic subjects. This style co-existed within his oeuvre with paintings that were softer and more amorphous.
