The drawing is probably a study made early in the design process for the painting of the Resurrection of Christ in the church of S. Nicolo dei Mendicoli, Venice.
The drawing has been lost since the 1930s.

P. Morgan, Jr. (1867-1943), New York; stolen from Library?; unknown owner (sale, London, Sotheby's, 20 May 1985, lot 25, not repr., as "Jacopo Palma, called Il Giovane, THE RESURRECTION, Brown ink and wash. 345 by 268 mm. £600-800," one of 157 lots with drawings sold as "The Property of a Gentleman").
