Wayside crosses were erected along roads or at intersections, often marking stops along the pilgrimage routes in predominantly Roman Catholic regions throughout Europe. The cross depicted by Callot, built of stone, is raised high to stand out above the landscape. The cross itself is richly decorated: on the side facing away is the crucified Christ, while the side facing the traveler seems to feature two figures. A similar landscape appears in another sheet of the same format in an album at Chatsworth (Ternois 1328).
Inscribed on verso, upper left, in pen, in an old regular script, "J. Callot"; in pencil at lower left, in same hand, "N. 21".
