Notes:

One of the many drawings by Antonio Guardi that copy the works of other Venetian masters, this is a study after Giambattista Tiepolo's Education of the Virgin altarpiece of 1732 in S. Maria della Fava, Venice. For recent discussions of Guardi's copies, see William Barcham, “The Issue of Copies: Three Drawings by Giannantonio Guardi in New York,” Artibus et Historiae 83 (2021), and Denis Ton, ed., Antonio Guardi: I Fasti Veneziani (Venice & Turin, 2023).
There is a slight sketch on the verso of a seated man with a compass or dividers and a globe, seemingly also copied, though the source has not yet been identified.

Inscription:

Inscribed in pen and brown ink, at lower left, by “the reliable Venetian hand”: [da] Gianbatista Tiepolo Veneziano.

Provenance:
“The Reliable Venetian Hand” (L. 3005c-d), a Venetian collector whose collection seems to have been taken en bloc to England by the 1770s; Sir Robert Ludwig Mond (1867-1938), London (see L. 2813a), by 1937; presumably to his daughter, Mrs. F.H. Brackley, Norfolk; Ann Thomas, New York; by whom given to Donald Tapley (1927-1999), New York, by 1963; his widow, Caroline Rosalie Tapley (1934-2020); Kate Tapley.
