In 1833, Delaroche had a great success with the unveiling of his Lady Jane Gray canvas (now in the National Gallery, London), following which he won the commission to paint murals at the church of the Madeleine in Paris. Feeling a need to study ecclesiastical painting before executing that work, he travelled to Italy with his fellow artists Edouard Bertin and Henri Delaborde. This drawing, inscribed "Florence, 1834" dates from that trip, and it seems likely that it depicts Delaborde, then aged 23.
