Primarily a sculptor, Ann Greene Kelly creates surrealistic assemblages of found objects, everyday items, and architectural elements. She also makes detailed colored pencil drawings in which she accumulates motifs referring to her domestic environment. The present sheet displays a fantastical interior space whose contents are distorted and flattened across the composition. Cans of sardines, a glass of wine, a pack of cigarettes, an ashtray, and a partly eaten sandwich are juxtaposed with references to the human body. An upside down self-portrait reveals marks of eczema on the artist's neck. The result is a very personal kind of still life that offers a new approach to a traditional genre.
