Notes:
Exhibition label: M. D. are the initials of Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), whom Baselitz has described as "terrible" at painting but whose lasting influence on contemporary art intrigued him. Here Duchamp appears to be wearing a dress, in a possible reference to his female alter ego, Rrose Sélavy (a pun on "Eros, c'est la vie"). In 2018 Baselitz created another homage to Duchamp in a group of works inspired by the French artist's painting Nude Descending a Staircase (1912)
