Notes:
Exhibition label: The title of this drawing refers to the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, whom Baselitz has greatly admired throughout his career. The floating head on the right evokes the disembodied heads in the foreground of many paintings by Munch, while the standing figure recalls his stiff, upright women who hold their arms close to their bodies. More significantly, Baselitz retained from Munch a way of defining shapes through multiple outlines, using fast-moving, flowing strokes that heighten the contours of figures.
