Notes:
Exhibition label: Baselitz's first upside-down drawings include several landscapes, often executed on pages removed from old books or ledgers. In this work from 1970 (upon which the artist later erroneously wrote "69"), the sideways direction of the text contributes to the disorientating effect, rendering the image more abstract. As a teenager, Baselitz had considered studying forestry before enrolling in art school. Trees would remain a frequent subject in his work.
