Both a sonic and a visual artist, Jones imagines how to translate sound into visual art. Her early works made literal reference to music and the act of listening, for instance by reproducing objects such as speakers and headphones. Early on, she also embraced collage as a technique common to the visual arts and musical compositions. In 2014 she moved toward a more conceptual approach, fusing minimalist abstraction with the language of musical experimentation. Score for Sustained Blackness #3 belongs to a series of works she began that year in which she explores the score as a visual concept. Adopting a minimalist aesthetic she combines collage elements with drawings, parts of it made with a Noligraph 5-line staff pen. The word "sustain" in the title refers to the steady state of a sound at its maximum intensity. Jones described her approach as a "search for time signature of blackness."
