Notes:
California-based artist Wayne Thiebaud achieved wide recognition in the early 1960s for his luscious paintings of cakes, candy counters, and ice cream cones. Drawing, however, has been central to his practice since he began his career as a commercial draftsman in the 1940s. This drawing of a ubiquitous salt shaker set against a dark ink and watercolor ground demonstrates his interest in exploring the effects of different mediums in combination.
