Erich Heckel was a founding member of the Brücke (Bridge) group of expressionist artists in 1905. Seeking to break from traditional German painting, Heckel and his cohort looked to the work of Gauguin, Van Gogh, and to collections of non-European art for inspiration. A superb example of Heckel's work in woodcut--a medium for which the German expressionists are known--this self-portrait is executed in a bold, angular style that gestures to African masks
