Notes:

Berlin-based artist Jorinde Voigt is known for her large abstract drawings based on non-visual sources such as musical compositions or philosophical texts. The present sheet belongs to a series of works inspired by the 1982 book "Love as Passion: The Codification of Intimacy" by German sociologist Niklas Luhmann (1927-1998). At once conceptual--reminiscent of maps and diagrams--and highly seductive with its graceful curves and shimmering colors, the drawing visualizes the mental images the artist forms when reading the text. Her meticulous collage technique consists in cutting out areas of the white paper, which are then gilded with gold or copper leaf before being reinserted into the sheet, in a manner similar to the intarsia technique.
