Proposed Mausoleum for Pierpont Morgan
Apr. 15, 1913.
Watercolor on paper.
17 1/16 x 10 1/2 inches (432 x 268 mm)
Notes:

Pierpont Morgan died age 76 on 31 March 1913 and his death was global news. This watercolor seems to be a proposal for a neogothic mausoleum dedicated to Morgan, designed in the weeks following his death. Above the golden door, two angels flank a roundel with a portrait of Morgan, above a winged angel weeps while the four corners are adorned with mourners or saints. Nothing is known about the architect who advanced this proposed monument, Eugene Leone-Solari, but he must have sent the drawing to the Morgan Library after inscribing it, in error, to James Pierpont Morgan.

Inscription:

Inscribed at bottom: To John Pierpont Morgan; dated: Naples le 15 avril 1913; signed: Geog.(?) arch. Eugene Leone-Solari; tipped onto backing sheet with inscription at lower right: Monsieur M. James Pierpont Morgan pour hommage E. Leone-Solari.
