By turns satirical, absurd, or grotesque, Anthony's images offer witty comments on social issues, contemporary culture, and--often--art history. He has described his style as "derived from the awful mistakes of the beginning students in my figurative drawing class." In 1987, while preparing a book featuring a selection of his drawings, Anthony made this composition for the endpapers, based on works that could not be included in the book for lack of space. The vignettes are typically homages to other artists--Francisco Goya, Jacques-Louis David, Lucas Samara--or to important individuals in the artist's life, such as his wife Norma.
