Notes:
The son of a cabinetmaker, Lachaise received his academic training in Paris before moving to the United States in 1906. He achieved recognition as a sculptor in the 1920s, primarily for his depiction of the female nude. He explored the same subject in drawings such as this one, characterized by a spontaneous, sensuous line and devoid of modelling. Lachaise's drawings were not studies for sculptures and are rarely dated. As in his sculptures, he relied on anatomical deformations to emphasize the voluptuousness of the female body.
