Born in Italy, but German by descent, Enrico d'Assia, otherwise known as Henry of Hesse (Heinrich Wilhelm Konstantin Victor Franz von Hessen-Kassel), was an amateur artist with a relatively small oeuvre. He was primarily interested in illustrating scenes from his favorite dramas and operas, and he preferred the media of tempera and gouache. According to an inscription at the lower margin of the drawing, this is a study of two costumes from Act I of Friedrich Schiller's Wallenstein. The play premiered at the Weimarer Hoftheater in 1798 to 1799, in productions directed by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Inscribed at lower left, "Assia 66"; at lower right, "Wallenstein' Act I".
